The disciples were scared because the storm was big, and Jesus was asleep. The wind howled, the waves crashed, and from where they sat, it felt as if nobody was watching over them. They didn't yet know how strong their friend really was. So they did the best thing they could think of: they woke Him up.

What happens in the story
Jesus and His disciples are crossing the Sea of Galilee when a great storm sweeps over the lake. Jesus is sleeping in the boat. His frightened friends wake Him, and with a word, He calms the wind and the waves.
He said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" (Mark 4:39b)
Notice what the story doesn't say. It doesn't say the storm never came, or that the friends should have felt brave. Jesus was in the boat the whole time, and the storm still came. Being close to Jesus doesn't mean we never feel afraid. It means we aren't alone when we do.

Why this matters for kids
Children know storms. Some are real ones, with thunder and a dark bedroom. Others are quieter: a first day at a new school, a sick grandparent, a big change at home. A child who asks, "If Jesus is with us, why am I scared?" is asking a very good question, and this story takes it seriously.
The disciples' fear wasn't hidden or scolded away in the telling. They brought it straight to Jesus. That is something a child can copy tonight: when you're scared, go to Him and say so. And the story shows who they were talking to. Jesus is with us in every storm, and He is stronger than anything that frightens us.

Talk about it together
- What do you think the disciples were feeling when the waves got bigger?
- When do you feel like you're in a storm? What could you say to Jesus about it?
You might also try the memory verse at bedtime. It's short enough for little ones to say along with you.
