David and Goliath, Read Aloud Anywhere

A shepherd boy, a giant, and five smooth stones. Here is what David and Goliath teaches children, and how read-to-me narration makes it easy to share anywhere.

Waiting rooms, car rides, the ten quiet minutes before dinner. Those are the moments when a story can do a lot of good. David and Goliath is one worth having ready, because it speaks to something every child feels: being small when the world feels very big.

What the story is about

In David and the Giant, young David carries bread to his brothers on the battlefield. There he hears the giant Goliath shout against God's people. While the grown soldiers are afraid, David remembers how the LORD rescued him from the lion and the bear. He sets aside the king's heavy armor, picks up five smooth stones and a sling, and goes out to face the giant.

The heart of it is simple. God is bigger than any giant, and courage comes from trusting Him, not from our own strength. David says it himself in the memory verse:

"You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD of Hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied." (1 Samuel 17:45)

Read to me, word by word

In the Fernbug app, the Read to me feature narrates every page and highlights each word as it is read. Little ones can follow along with their eyes, and early readers see how the sounds match the letters. It also means a grandparent, a babysitter, or a tired parent can hand over a story and know it is being read well.

Each story is written four ways, so everyone in the family can listen to the same account at their own level:

  • Seeds (ages 2–4): "God Helps David"
  • Sprouts (ages 4–6): "Five Smooth Stones and a Sling"
  • Branches (ages 6–9): "When the Battle Is the Lord's"
  • Roots (ages 9–12): "The Living God Against Goliath of Gath"

Talking about it at home

Try asking: What was the giant in David's story? What are some big, scary things in our days? Children often name real worries, like a new school or a hard goodbye. You can remind them that David did not face Goliath alone, and neither do they.

You might also ask: How did David know God would help him? He remembered what God had already done. Together, you could name a time God helped your family, and let that be a small stone to carry.

After each story you will also find a memory verse, discussion questions, a song, and printable coloring pages, so the conversation can keep going.
