Finding out about a hangout nobody told you about hurts. It's also lonely in a specific way: you can be surrounded by people and still feel like nobody sees you. Here's the point: the people around you might miss you, but God doesn't. You are not invisible to him.
What the passage says
Hagar was a servant in Abram and Sarai's household. She had almost no say over her own life. When things got tense, Sarai treated her so harshly that Hagar ran away into the desert, pregnant and on her own. Nobody from that house came looking.
God did. The angel of the LORD found her by a spring and spoke to her. He told her:
"Behold, you have conceived and will bear a son. And you shall name him Ishmael, for the LORD has heard your cry of affliction."
Then Hagar did something remarkable. She gave God a name:
"You are the God who sees me," for she said, "Here I have seen the One who sees me!"
She wasn't a king or a priest. She was a runaway servant everyone else had overlooked. Yet she's one of the only people in the Bible to give God a name, and the name she chose was about being seen.
What that means for you
People might forget to invite you, talk over you, or never ask how you're really doing. It's OK to admit that hurts. But God knows your name, he knows where you are, and he hears the cry you haven't said out loud to anyone.
That doesn't fix everything today. It gives you somewhere solid to start.
One thing to try today
Write "You are the God who sees me" somewhere you'll notice it. Your phone lock screen works. So does a sticky note on your mirror. Read it when the lonely feeling shows up.
Think about it
- When was the last time you felt unseen? What did you do with that feeling?
- What would change if you really believed God had noticed you in that moment?
