What Was Here Before Anything? A Bedtime Answer from Genesis

When your child whispers "What was here before anything?" in the dark, Genesis gives a simple, steady answer: God. Here is how to share it at bedtime.

The lights are off, and a small voice asks, "What was here before anything?" Here is the answer the Bible gives, and it is a simple one: God. Genesis opens with these words, "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." Before there was light, land, or anyone to ask the question, God was there, and He made everything.

God Made Everything: God puts a big sun up high. Warm sun for the day! God makes a glowing moon. Twinkle, twinkle, little stars! They shine at night.

What the story shows

In God Made Everything, children walk through the seven days of creation. God speaks, and light comes. He speaks again, and there is land, then plants, then animals. On the sixth day He makes people. On the seventh day He rests.

Notice that nothing in the story happens by accident. Each thing is called into being by God, and each thing is seen by Him as good. That is a quiet, steady thing for a child to hold onto when the room is dark and the question feels big.

God Made Everything: In the beginning, God makes everything. There is no light anywhere. Then God speaks. Light! Bright, warm light shines. God calls it day.

Why it matters for kids

Children often ask the biggest questions right when the day is over and everything is still. They are not looking for a long lecture. They want to know that the world has a loving beginning, and that they belong in it.

The creation story gives them three things to carry:

  • God made everything. The stars, the soil, the dog at the foot of the bed.
  • What He made is good. The world is not a mistake.
  • People are made in His image. Your child is wanted and known.
God Made Everything: God sees water. Water is everywhere! God speaks again. Sky! Big blue sky stretches up high. God calls it sky.

Talk about it together

You do not need to have every answer. Try one or two of these, and let the quiet be part of the conversation:

  1. What is one thing God made that you are glad about tonight?
  2. God saw that what He made was good. What do you think He felt when He made you?

You might also say the memory verse together a few times until it feels like a bedtime blessing: "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." (Genesis 1:1)
