It's a wonderful question, and kids tend to ask it at bedtime: why would Jesus ask for a piece of fish? We want to be honest with you. The fish isn't part of our telling of The First Easter, so we won't guess at a reason. What the story does show is this: after the saddest Friday and the quietest Saturday, Jesus came to His friends in person. He stood among them and said, "Peace be with you." He wasn't far away or hard to find. He was close.
What the story shows
On Friday, the friends of Jesus go home heartbroken. On Saturday, the world holds its breath. Then, very early on Sunday morning, the women come to a garden tomb and find the great stone rolled away and the tomb empty. Angels ask them a question of their own:
"Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen." (Luke 24:5-6)
After that, the story keeps moving toward people. Mary hears her own name spoken in the garden. Peter runs to see for himself. Jesus stands among His friends. Each moment is personal, and none of it is a lesson from far away.
Why it matters for kids
Children often wonder whether something is really real. Easter answers with a Jesus who is alive and who comes near the people He loves. Notice that nobody in this story is hurried or scolded for being sad. Jesus meets them where they are, calls Mary by name, and gives His friends peace.
A question like "why the fish?" is also a good habit to nurture. When your child asks about a small detail, you can say, "Let's look at what the story tells us." Sometimes the answer is right there on the page, and sometimes we get to wonder together.
Talk about it together
- Mary heard Jesus say her name. How does it feel when someone who loves you says your name?
- The friends of Jesus were sad on Friday and Saturday. What do you think changed for them on Sunday morning?
